The use of lagundi as a herbal medicine for patients with mild coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has shown positive results, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said.

DOST Under-Secretary for Research and Development (R&D) Rowena Cristina Guevara unveiled the initial finding of the project team that conducted clinical trials on the use of lagundi (Chinese chaste tree) as a medicine. herbal against COVID-19.

The team, led by Dr Cecilia Nelia C. Maramba-Lazarte of the University of the Philippines (UP) in Manila-National Institute of Health (UP-NIH), completed clinical trials on August 12 and are finalizing the report technical. .

Guevara said they will study the antiviral effect of lagundi for mild and moderate COVID-19 patients with co-morbidities.

Lagundi is widely used as a cough remedy.

In his June 25 weekly report, DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said the condition of patients with mild COVID-19 who participated in clinical trials on the country’s lagundi did did not progress to moderate or severe cases, and no adverse effects were seen in the participants, citing analysis of the initial study data.

In July 2020, it was announced that clinical trials for lagundi had been approved by the DOST-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD).
